AirBnB Refresh
and Renovate
The Brief
Turn the underutilised rumpus space into a self-contained AirBnB.
The client had been renting out one of the rooms in the main house but wanted to regain some privacy. It was decided that the underutilized rumpus room would be perfect for creating a separate, self-contained unit. Originally a workshop that had gradually turned into a storage room, this space featured its own entrance, which opened onto a private courtyard—making it an ideal area to transform into private accommodation.
My Involvement in the Project:
-
Initial client meetings to discuss needs, preferences, and potential design options.
-
Site visits to assess the feasibility of the project, and take precise measurements for planning.
-
Development of Concept Design proposal, followed by the creation of the Final Client-Approved Design package.
-
Sourced wall and floor finishes, furniture, curtains, bedding, and all bathroom fittings and fixtures.
-
Procurement of materials, fittings and finishes
-
Management of the installation of all work completed by Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs) and contractors.
-
Client assistance with Building Consent and CCC Application ensure compliance.
The Process
-
The main house entrance was cleverly concealed behind a feature wall made from recycled pallet planks.
-
The existing gib board around the concrete chimney was removed, allowing for the addition of more shelving in both the bedroom and bathroom areas.
-
Energy-efficient downlights were installed to enhance lighting while reducing energy consumption.
-
A new layout for the kitchenette and bathroom was designed to maximize the use of available space.
-
A fresh coat of paint on the ceilings and walls completed the transformation, giving the space a revitalized look.
The Result
A warm and welcoming self-contained unit perfect for short term accommodation of business people. The sleeper couch open the space up for families to stay for a while, and the kitchenette is perfect for preparing a quick breakfast or an easy dinner.
